Bengkung belly binding is the art of wrapping a postpartum person’s belly for physical support and to help hasten the recovery process after childbirth. This belly binding technique uses a long strip of cloth to wrap around the abdomen from the hips to the ribcage. People are traditionally wrapped as soon after birth as possible, ideally on day five and then worn for 40 days or longer as needed. The Bengkung belly binding technique is rooted in Malaysian culture. However various countries and cultures around the world use a form of belly binding to help support the healing process.
Benefits of Belly Binding
- Provides postural support for the torso and organs as they return to pre- pregnancy position
- Supports and assists abdominal wall healing and recti diastasis recovery
- Supports the body’s natural spine and posture realignment post birth
- Constant pressure on the torso and abdomen hastens healing by reducing water, fat and air in the tissue and cells
- Stabilizes loose ligaments
- Helps to prevent and relieve lower back aches and strains
- Prevents slouching while feeding or holding your child
This type of postpartum abdominal wrap is a worthwhile investment and can be kept forever.
It can be worn:
- back pain symptoms from breastfeeding, picking up and carrying our newborn
- during monthly menses for menstrual cramping and to support and bring warmth to the womb area
- back injuries
For Best Results, birthing people should be wrapped as soon as they can after birth, ideally on the fifth day of postpartum. The belly bind should be worn daily for 8-12 hours a day for at least 40 days or longer. Often people who use a belly bind after birth return to their own pre-pregnancy size in 6-8 weeks.
Cesarean delivery light abdominal wrapping, for comfort can begin after stitches are healed with no pressure on the incision. Normally after 14 days more snug wrapping can occur above the incision area. After 4- 6 weeks until the incision is mostly healed with clearance from the care provider the birthing person can begin normal binding. These times are all estimates, it depends on the birthing person’s medical condition.

Lactation Counseling
If breastfeeding is painful, milk supply is a concern, infant weight gain is not optimal, feedings are long, or the baby is inconsolable, the assistance of a lactation consultant can provide insightful information. In addition, if you are feeling unsure of yourself or have received mixed advice regarding breastfeeding, the lactation consultant can provide you with evidence based information.
A home visit generally lasts 1-2 hours. During this time a physical assessment of the mother and baby will be taken as it relates to breastfeeding. Typically, a full feeding will be observed. Attention will be paid to the baby’s positioning and latch as well as to the mother’s overall comfort. The baby will be weighed on a digital scale, before and after the feeding, as a tool to assist in determining how breastfeeding is going. After making careful notes and observations, a plan will be made that is specific to the needs of the mother and baby.

Sleep Training
Baby sleep training is an umbrella term for a number of methods that help babies stabilize their naturally chaotic sleep patterns; in turn help parents get more sleep. I offer a variety of sleep training methods that parents can choose from, most of which were developed by pediatricians or infant sleep experts. Each of these methods requires a different kind, and amount, of parent participation — and each elicits a different response from the baby. With some sleep training methods, baby crying is expected, for others, it’s discouraged.
But despite the diversity of baby sleep training methods, the goal for each is the same: a baby that can sleep several hours at a stretch without parental intervention. When a baby is able to sleep more soundly and can fall back asleep on their own, it not only improves the mood and disposition of the child but also improves quality of life for sleep-deprived parents.
No matter what sleep training technique parents choose, successful sleep training requires parents to be patient, resilient, and consistent. The process is also helped by parents creating a nighttime ritual and an environment that is built to promote healthy sleep. Sleep training is recommended when the baby is 4 to 6 months old.
